Introduction: “Like Those Before Us”
Introduction
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” These are the words of Isaac Newton, the renowned physicist and mathematician behind many groundbreaking discoveries. He wrote these words because he attributed his achievements to his predecessors and their scientific contributions; their work paved the way for his own.
Though the meaning will slightly change for our purposes, during this Lent season, we also want to “stand on the shoulders of giants.” As our church’s theme for 2026 is Like Those Before Us, we want to learn from past Christians (outside of the Bible) by “considering the outcome of their way of life and imitating their faith” (Heb. 13:7). Looking into their lives will instruct us in how to live for God and help us grow in our relationship with Him. And as we learn from them, God can shape us to be examples for others as well.
Reflecting on past Christians also requires discernment. By no means are we acknowledging that they were perfect. Like us, they struggled with sin and had many failures. Bearing this in mind, we trust that God can still use their lives to deepen our relationship with Him and further solidify our commitments to His kingdom.
Each day will focus on one individual, highlighting a particular aspect or quality of his or her faith. There is also a time of reflection at the end of every entry, allowing us to respond prayerfully. As these posts are meant to encourage and even challenge us, let us stand on these spiritual giants by imitating their faith. In doing so, God will further transform us to become more like Christ.
